What are red berries?
Let’s call a spade a spade: broadly speaking, all red-coloured fruits or berries are red berries. It is no more complicated than that, is it? What if we told you about our favourites?
-
Strawberry
Did you know that the strawberry is a “false fruit”? The fleshy red part is the receptacle of the strawberry flower, while its fruits are the small seeds scattered across it. In medieval times, the nobility considered it grew too close to the ground to be appreciated. But later, strawberries had their revenge: Louis XIV loved them so much that he had them planted in a large part of the famous “King’s Kitchen Garden”.

Blackcurrant
It appears in many writings dating back several centuries, but at the time it was its leaves that were prized for their medicinal properties. Today, because it is very tart when fresh, it is enjoyed almost exclusively cooked, in jams, sorbets, tarts… It is so rich in vitamin C that it is often described as a superfruit: it contains three times more than an orange!
-
Blackberry
It is the forest fruit most commonly found growing wild, the one that is easily nibbled along paths. Geographically, it is thought to originate in the Caucasus Mountains, where it first appeared more than 2,000 years ago. But Greek mythology tells that it came from a bramble born from the blood of the Titans, shed during their battles against the gods of Olympus.

Raspberry
The origins of the raspberry? We have heard that… because the raspberry bush’s scientific name is “Rubus idaeus”, it is said to have originated on Mount Ida and that the gods of Olympus loved its fruit. According to another myth, “rubus” meaning “bramble”, Zeus’s nurse Ida is said to have turned the raspberry red when she pricked herself while picking it. So, myth or legend? Whatever the case, the raspberry is a red berry consumed for centuries and appears to be the true king of red berries, with its highly fragrant flavour, both sweet and tangy.
